![]() She worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), went back to school to Washtenaw Community College, earned her associate degree in nursing (ADN) to become a registered nurse (RN). Joseph’s Hospital as a nurse’s aide, then attended Practical Nursing School in 1962, took the state board and became an LPN in 1963. She attended Milan High School and graduated in 1957. Her dad became a farmer – he farmed corn, green beans, tomatoes and he would take them to Eastern Market on weekends to sell their produce. ![]() ![]() Her father did not like city living so they relocated from Detroit to have more space. Henley’s family moved to Maybee in 1945 and she attended a one-room schoolhouse - Worth School on Tuttlehill Road, a mile from their homestead, so she walked to school each day. Her parents were married in the South and moved to Michigan. Barbara had three brothers and one sister she was the 5th child. Her mother, who was from Yahoo City, Mississippi, and was a homemaker. Her father was from Missouri and worked in a factory in Detroit. Henley was born in 1939 on the east side of Detroit on Livingston Street in her family’s home.
